If you would have told me almost a year ago that I would be writing a post about healthy hair, I would have rolled my eyes, chuckled, and went back to drinking my Coke Zero. True story.
I was the girl who HAD to blow dry her hair, straighten it, and then curl it for it to look tame. Hanging at the beach or the pool? If just a single strand got wet then up in a messy bun it HAD to go…think Monica in Hawaii. Air drying was only an option when I was at home alone and had hours to let it dry naturally before starting that straightening routine. But guys, enter my now low(er) maintenance and easier to manage haircare.

Over the past 6+ months, I have really been focusing on my overall health and wellness and just this week, I received so many compliments on my hair, I had to reflect back and think about what has changed in my routine.
I started noticing a difference in the way my hair air dried, but since I see myself every day, I didn’t really pick up on the changes as much as it seems others started to.
So, let me share with you the 4 things I have been doing differently that I think have helped me not only cut down on time but also up my mane game.
1. Cut Down on Washing
Over the past 6 months, I have slowly worked towards a routine where I only wash my hair 2 times a week. 3, if I have a special occasion or something that requires a little extra something. I have to be real, this was hard for me because I do not like to wear my hair up, but after a month or 2 of being diligent, I now wash my hair on Thursdays and Sundays. These are the days that work best for me based on my gym routine. If you struggle with greasy hair, I recommend incorporating in dry shampoo as much as you feel the need to during those trying stages.

2. Beat the Heat
This was a really hard one for me. As I mentioned before, air drying has NEVER been something I could do during the day, so I started washing my hair at night. This fits into my schedule perfectly when I started going to evening gym sessions. On those nights I needed to wash my hair, I would let it air dry before bed and then wake up ready to style. Not only have I cut out blow drying almost entirely, but the healthier my hair got, the less I have had to use a flat iron on it. I will usually only straighten it once the morning after I wash it, and then will curl it every other week.
3. H20 is Your Friend
After joining a new gym, I quickly realized I was not drinking enough water for my body and activity level. I now try to consume my weight in ounces of water (125lbs = 125 oz). Not only have I seen a difference in my skin, but I think my hair has been thanking me too.

Struggle with drinking water? Try a stainless steel tumbler with a straw. I struggle to drink as much without a straw, I think it is a convenience thing. Also, the stainless steel allows me to add Young Living’s vitality essential oils if I want a little bit of flavor.
4. Ditch the Toxins
The primary thing that has changed in my routine and I think in turn changed my hair, have been the products that I choose to use. I recently switched to Young Living’s Lavender Mint shampoo and conditioner and allowed my hair to detox.

The shine I thought I thought was my own, was really just a build up of things coating my hair and making me think it was healthy. I didn’t love this shampoo and conditioner at first, but after a little over a month, my scalp and hair thank me! I no longer have buildup, my hair has a natural shine, and I can go longer between washes without needing dry shampoo.
As you can see, not much in my daily routine has changed and all of these things have been easy for me to adjust to. I know every head of hair is different, so what works for me may not work for you, but try making small changes and being consistent! You will find something that works for you.
